BILL HALEY | Vive
La Rock n' Roll - Big Beat Records - BBR00073 "Vive
La Rock n' Roll" is a unique record of a concert
given by the band at the famous Olympia theatre in Paris.
This was part of an extensive European tour undertaken by
Bill to rebuild the organisations finances. However, bad
luck dogged the tour from beginning to end. Various shady
deals by Bill's manager, the death of the Pope (most of
the Italian gigs were cancelled) and severe rioting at
the concerts all contributed to financial catastrophe.
But through all this, the music shines through as this CD
proves. There is a complete show from October 14th 1958
and part of a show from the following day. Klaus Kettner of
Hydra Records continues to provide us with fascinating
rare Haley recordings. His latest release, "On The
Air" features 2 American Forces Network radio shows
from August and September 1962. If anyone ever wanted to
prove the musical versatlity of the Comets, then this CD
would provide ample evidence. At the time Bill and the
band were touring US military bases in Germany and
dropped in to the AFN studios in Frankfurt to promote
their tour. Bill and the Comets proceed to present the
complete history of popular music from Dixieland to Jazz
to Country to Rock n' Roll. The CD is accompanied by an
excellent booklet with many rare photos of Bill
performing at the famous Star Club in Hamburg (where he
met the Beatles on this tour). Sleeve notes are by Chris
Gardner and as usual they are excellent and very
detailed.
